A head-mounted display (HMD) is a device that is worn on the head and displays visual information directly in front of one or both eyes. HMDs can be used for a variety of applications, including virtual reality, augmented reality, and computer-assisted design. They typically include a display panel, optics, and a means of tracking the user’s head movements to update the display accordingly. Some HMDs also include built-in audio speakers or a connection to external headphones.
There are different types of HMDs:
- Virtual reality headsets
- Devices that have the capability of reflecting projected images as well as allowing the user to see through it.
HMDs can have a display optic in front of one (monocular HMD) or each eye (binocular HMD).
